ABOUT US:
Pool Players for Hire was founded in 2009 by CJ Jerome, a semi-pro pool player from Owosso, Michigan. The concept was formed when remodeling her home, converting the attached garage into a rec room. In the process of doing that, several services were required: cement for a new (detached) garage, framing/construction for the new room, heating and cooling, painting, and residing of the entire house. ALL of these services were performed by pool player-owned businesses.
The idea for Pool Players for Hire was conceived from this project. However, it didn’t come to fruition until later in the decade when Michigan was deeply afflicted by the economy. The auto industry was hit hard, and the domino effect on every other business was staggering. Those dominoes were falling through the pool community as well. Pool halls were shutting down. Tournaments were dying because people couldn’t afford to play. Small business owners were hit the hardest. Almost every service out there was feeling the pain of cut-backs, and many lost loyal customers because of it. The potential for gaining new customers was also gone because advertising was no longer a priority in the small business budget, although it should have been. A few survived on word-of-mouth. Some shut their doors completely. Others left state to find work elsewhere.
CJ wanted to help her friends in the pool community. Pool players don’t have a pension plan; we don’t have corporate sponsors for big money in tournaments. We only have love of the game, and for most, it doesn’t pay the bills. But if you own a business and you do good work, shouldn’t that pay the bills? CJ knew a lot of people in the pool community who are good at what they do (outside the pool room), but who couldn’t afford to advertise. Hence Pool Players for Hire was born.
The theory is that we all need services of some sort, and if a fellow player knows you do a particular service, they are more likely to contact and support you than a name they don’t know from a phone book. They are also more likely to refer a business that is owned by someone they know. The business owner picks up a new customer, the customer gets a discount (a recommended tactic for drawing in the sale), the customer refers the business owner to family, friends, etc., and the wheel goes round and round.
Pool Players Helping Pool Players, rebuilding the economy, spreading the word about people who work hard for a fair price — that’s what we’re about. Pass it on!
